The goal (IMO) is when presented with a chord (or chord progression), you know the notes of that chord, the associated scale(s), what the notes sound like against the harmony and where they are ALL over the board...no patterns, no licks...just notes...BEFORE U TOUCH THE INSTRUMENT...this applies whether u are in a supportive or melodic role...it is what I emphasize to ALL my students and what I strive for in my own practice.
