On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we continue the series on "Fundamentals. Today, "Music Theory". First, I want to talk about sources that pigeonhole this subject by instrument, genre or level of involvement. There is not one aspect of music theory that one player needs more than another. It is ONE subject for everyone. How u apply it is where differences occur. A med student doesn't just study Orthopedics. They study General Medicine first...THEN specialize. The application is where things can differ.  Second, music theory should not be looked at as a set of strict rules. It is a set of guidelines to help you down ur musical path. A way to figure out, for example, WHY things sound good, how to improve ur musicality and how to progress/grow/evolve further. It should improve ur creativity, not stifle it.  Of course, a lot of this is how it is presented and eventually applied. Learning music theory "completely" makes u sensitive to all aspects of a given piece or playing situation and allows u to see where ur part fits in the greater whole. IMO, this breeds musicians, NOT musical techicians...and that's a good thing. As usual, how? There are countless resources for music theory.  A teacher, books, video tutorials, etc. Choose the one that works for u. Understand, this is part of a lifelong journey, so u don't need to consume it all at once. Take ur time...go as "deep" as u feel comfortable and go deeper as u progress. Ask questions, find examples to study. Music Theory doesn't help u of u can't apply it somehow. Start with subjects that apply to ur current playing situation and move out from there. U will be amazed at what new avenues u will discover. I have seen it in my career and with countless students.  As always, I invite your insights. #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons  #remotelessons #www.charleysabatino.com
