Tension Part 2

On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we conclude our discussion on "Tension ". This week, tension from performance. AKA stage fright or butterflies in the stomach, we have all experienced it and can range from mild jitters to paralyzing fear (been there). While everyone gets it, there are ways to at least diminish it. First, be prepared. Knowing all the details of any performance ahead of time goes a long way to reducing stress. Sometimes, this is provided when the gig is given, but sometimes u may have to ask for them (I have had to do this more times than I can count). The address of the venue, load in time and details, dress code, equipment requirements, etc. Next, learn the music...COMPLETELY. The intros! The segues! All of it!! This may sound  obvious, but some need to be reminded!  If there are charts, have the charts handy. Mark them up if needed...and have a stand, a pencil AND A LIGHT! Ask any questions BEFORE the day of the gig. It won't help ur stress level or ur reputation if ur rushing around fixing charts or relearning tunes just before downbeat. Next, reliable equipment and transportation. Knowing u can get to the gig and having gear that is maintained and in working order (not necessarily expensive gear) takes another stresser off ur mind. Ok...we have all our info, we have worked on the tunes. Now, the day of the gig...ARRIVE EARLY! Allow for traffic, parking, crazy load ins, etc. Rushing around does not make one calm. Be able to have time to set up, tune up, get ready...and take a breath. This extra time also allows u to deal with unexpected ussues that invariably come up. Lastly, we can talk about routine practices that will help to reduce general stress. Things like breathing exercises that stimulate the Vagal nervous system (u can find them on apps, YouTube, etc.). Stretching/yoga, hydration, diet, fitness, etc. These will obviously help with overall heath and thereby reduce stress. Tension (stress) can be debilitating and a hindrance to our progress and lives as artists and human beings.
