On this "May Day" installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we discuss " 'Failure' in the Woodshed". First of all, there is actually no failure in the shed. Just our perception of it. The fact that ur IN the shed makes any endeavor a success. Now, I'm not talking about learning tunes for a gig or playing "for fun" (both of these are very important). I'm talking about work to make u a better player. The shed is a place to plan, grow, work, learn and evolve. It is not necessarily a place of "comfort". Previously, I have spoken about what areas to cover (IMO), but today I am more talking "approach"...an understanding of the process. Some skills or concepts are not always simple to grasp. They take time to understand AND time to incorporate into ur playing. Some concepts evolve as u do, so they are lifelong processes. The bottom line is that with this kind of work, u will mostly not sound good, feel good or "play well". Ur not supposed to! Ur learning new stuff...difficult stuff!!  My shed sounds like I'm slaughtering livestock with much loud cursing added, lol.  Then why bother? Because rhe benefits will be returned one hundred fold in ur playing. How? First and foremost, u need PATIENCE! The process here has no end date. U just DO and PUSH until u can't. Plain and simple. With good planning (as I have covered in the past) and good methodology, ur playing will steadily go to places u have never dreamed. This applies to ALL levels of play and involvement..whether u practice 12 hours a day, or 12 minutes per week. I have seen it myself and with countless students. Understand, while u may not "master" (I hate that word in this context) a given concept in the shed, the benefits to ur playing along the way will be many and will be noticed by u and others.  U need to be confident in the process. As always, I invite your insights. #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons  #remotelessons #www.charleysabatino.com.
