Don't Let One Genre Define U

On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday..."Don't let one genre define u". Just like in investments, diversity is key to success. Look at Kip Winger, Flea, Andre 3000, every comedian that has played a terrifying villian on SVU. The more u diversify ur range, the more you bring to the table creatively (I think I've written that in these talks a thousand times). It is why the Italian chef spends a year in Singapore, and visa versa..to bring new life to their creativity and new ideas. Art is, by definition an activity of expansion, with countless avenues to explore. So why do we seem to "pidgeonhole " ourselves? Well, you might say, "it's what I like"...well, ok...how do u know u don't like something else as well? Remember, just because you "explore" another area of music, doesn't mean u have to like it. In addition, u liking or disliking it doesn't stop u from gaining inspiration!! Finally, the more limit your playing "field", the fewer opportunities u will have to play. So, as usual, how? There is no requirement here...more like a mindset. Sometimes discussions with colleagues and friends to find new areas or genres to check out. If u consider urself a "jazz guy", go check out ur metalhead friend's band. Never listened to classical? Find someone who knows the genre and get some listening ideas...or just Google it! Jam with people playing different genres. Find people that know ur "new" to the scene and will help u. It will be a humbling, eye opening and rewarding experience. A good teacher will also introduce u to different genres and do so without judgement. I have delved into different genres several times in my journey. Each time, I found so many areas to explore. U will be amazed at the outcome. As always, I invite your insights. #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons  #remotelessons #www.charleysabatino.com
