On this "Trick or Treat" installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we continue the series on "Fundamentals. Today, "reading". Now, I'm not going to get into the debate of "Tabs vs. Notes", mainly because I don't believe this is an "either/or" issue. Understand though, there are certain playing situations where reading notation is either helpful or required. Learn one...learn both. The bottom line is u do u. Feel free to insert "tabs" wherever I write "notes" if u prefer. I also want to distinguish between reading and sightreading. They are two different skills. I feel everyone should be able to do the former, not necessarily the latter (these skills do overlap to some extent). It is like working out to stay in shape or to compete in The Iron Man. Knowing notation goes WAY beyond just reading or writing notes. It adds another sense to the learning process...SIGHT. If u could smell or taste the music..u dig? The goal is to hear, feel and "visualize" the music utilizing the "Ear Training" techniques we spoke about last week. It REALLY streamlines the learning process. And of course, notation is an excellent method of conveying ur ideas to other players, documenting compositions or learning new music. Ok, as usual...how? The best way to learn to read...IS TO READ! I can't tell you how many people ask me if there is a shortcut. IMO, there isn't. There are countless resources available. Start SIMPLE. Start SLOWLY. Be consistent. You are learning a skill, one that is constantly improving. I try to read something every day. Next, pick a tune and try to write (or tab) it out. Listen to a passage, try to visualize the notation and write it down as accuratelyaspossible. Check yourself. It will be VERY difficult at first, but you will improve. I've seen it with countless students. Your ear will thank you. By approaching reading "from both sides ", you will reap the benefits that reach far beyond the notation. As always, I invite your insights. #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons #remotelessons #www.charleysabatino.com
