Don't Beat a Dead Horse
On this "Mischief Night" installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we discuss "Don't Beat a Dead Horse ". We have all seen the memes about "Play it until u can't get it wrong"...eh, maybe. If ur under the gun learning things for a performance..ok. But for general practice, I would say not so much. IMO, mindless repitition does not necessarily yield progress. You need to give ur brain and hands time to acclimate. Better to play slowly and deliberately, giving u a chance to understand what needs to be accomplished. Try working in small increments, for like 15-30 minutes at a time. Sometimes long sessions can yield diminishing returns. Understand some shed is for the "long haul" and as such takes time and is achieved through patience and small victories. I have spoken many times about working on more than one subject/concept in the shed. Here, it helps because if one area is frustrating u, put it aside for a day and go on to another. It refreshes the mind and gives the brain time to sort things out. Also remember, all the areas in the shed are at least somewhat related, so when ur not working on a given area, ur working on a given area, lol. I tell students all the time to be patient and give themselves some grace. Really frustrated? Maybe take a day off. Go do something else. Ur not "quitting", ur regrouping. I do it all the time, U dig? This stuff is difficult and we all struggle. The journey is lifelong, can be difficult and full of bumps, but it is ultimately fruitful and rewarding. As always, I invite your insights. #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons #remotelessons #www.charleysabatino.com
