Art is Art

On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we discuss the concept of "Art is Art".  We get into an objective vs. subjective argument here. Art is the product of a person or group of person's creativity and vision. Whether u like it or not, does not change that fact. Now, of course, if it is hateful, misogynistic, or vulgar (especially in then presence of children) it is a different issue..but that is outside the realm of this discussion. The "art is art" issue comes up all the time with students and colleagues...equating personal opinions with definitions. The most common example lately is the new incarnation of Rush. Like it? Hate it? Don't care? That's fine. Is it art? Valid? ABSOLUTLEY.  What they are doing is their vision of "what's next". They could have come out rocking "Finding My Way" with an accordion, basoon and claves at the Juno Awards..it's THEIR CHOCE. It is part of what art is.  Despite what any "purists "  or artistic killjoys say. I constantly see posts and hear discussions from classical elitists, jazz preservationists and rock snobs. I'm sorry, it is not the 1850's, the 1950's or 1970's...art moves on with or without you. Top 40? KPop? Extreme progressive, Avant-garde or "experimental " music? Yup...all of it and any other genre or style u can name. Yoko Ono? She is the butt of many a joke...but, ya know what? While not my favorite, she is expressing herself...good or bad...it is art. Ok, now what? First and foremost, OPEN UR MIND!!! There is a world of amazing stuff to experience...go outside ur comfort zone! Listent to everything u can (at least once). Listen openly and with no opinions. Look for things u can identify with...explore those that u don't. My experience is u will gain inspiration...prevent becoming "stale". I adopted this mindset a long time ago and preach it to all my students...now I can find inspiration anywhere.
