Clones

On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we discuss "clones". I'm not referring to Star Wars or abominations of nature happening in secret labs underneath castles. I'm also not talking about playing situations that REQUIRE this (shows, tribute bands, etc.). I'm talking about players copying other players out of "idol worship". We have all seen it live and on social media. Players playing their hero's transcriptions note for note. Using the same gear. The same stance. I have even seen players dressing the same (ew)! You might say, "Hey! What's the big deal! Joe Pepicoppola is an amazing bassist! I love his lines! I love his gear!..." U r correct...that is all amazing..BUT..we already have one of him. We need one of YOU! Ur an important part of the journey of art. I have said many times in other talks, those we admire are NOT endpoints, but starting points. They are the example problem at the beginning of the math chapter. We use them as inspiration to take our OWN path, move on and make art better!  Ok, what do we do? First of all, define a purpose to learn someone else's line (aside from gig material or enjoyment...those are important too). Examples include: technique practice, phrasing examples, harmonic usage, etc. Next, tear the line apart. Find all the WHATS, WHYS and HOWS of it...harmonically, melodically, technique,  arrangement...everything. What can u learn? What do u like or dislike? Next, make ur own line over the tune..AND DON'T GIVE ME THIS "I CAN'T IMPROVE ON PERFECTION" BULLSHIT! Make sure u know what u did and why. As stated above, strive to make it ur own while still serving the song. Art MUST evolve, IMO. It is what keeps it interesting and alive. However, the only way it can evolve is if we allow it. If we don't, art becomes a parody of itself and lies to waste.
