Arpeggios, Pentatonics, Scales, etc.

On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, I will continue the series on "The Woodshed". A caveat here. What I will cover is based on my experience as a student, performer and educator. Everything is open to discussion. This week, "Arpeggios, Pentatonics, Scales, etc.". Now, this where we begin the basics of bassline construction. The key here is to think NOTES! IMO, there is no magic pill, no system, no color charts, no poster that can truly help here, at least in the long run. When u think note to note, you are able to be truly creative and original...even with an existing bassline. It takes time, patience and WORK. Ok, as usual, how? First, determine which of the above u want ro study...there is absolutley no need to cover them all at once. You can even start with roots and 5ths and...very important!  Determine the function of each. Find out what each change in "level" buys you (e.g. arpeggios vs. pentatonics, etc.). Take a different one each day detrmine the notes. Find them all over the neck. Say them...sing them! Play them against a chord or at least a drone. Hear what the different notes sound like and how u feel u can use them. The goal is to be able to know what to play anywhere on the board at any given time and create an original bassline free of riffs, licks and patterns or be able to purposefully add to or augment an existing one. Thinking of "music on the molecular level" TRULY releases ur creativity IMO. While it takes time and patience,  it will yield many benefits.
