Mini Lesson-How to Practice

July 30, 2014

A lot of players don't realize HOW you practice is as important as WHAT you practice. Your practice schedule should be as thought out as the material you are trying master.  The key is PLANNING.  You need to plan your practice time to maximize its benefit.  At first, it will be just session to session. .it will eventually expand as you feel more comfortable.  This will help you to set broader goals and progress more quickly.

So, how do you do this.  First, write down the areas you are studying...material  from a teacher, a specific technique, rudiments, tunes for your band, etc.  Assign an amount of time to work on each area...5 min, 15 min, 1 hour...whatever you initially feel is required.  But stick to it.  Then, after your practice session, determine if the time you allowed is sufficient.  If not, change it...add or subtract time from each as you see fit.  You can also add/delete areas of study as needed.  This pointed, flexible method will help you to make effective use of your time.

Planning your practice time will also help you to practice longer.  There was a time when I was young, an hour of practice seemed like an eternity.  Now, 4, 6, 10 hours are easily possible.  By planning BEFORE practice, there is less of a chance of boredom or tedium...only effective purposeful work.

Lots of luck and feel free to message me with questions.
