On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we continue a multi-part discussion on "myths". Again, a caveat here. The "myths" I will present here are based on my experience as a performer and educator. Many of these can be up for debate. U disagree? GOOD! Any worthwhile topic can benefit from cordial discourse. Ok. Myth: "You need to stretch your left hand at least (4,5,6...) frets". Ok, let's start with an old adage. If something hurts when u do it, DON'T DO IT! We are all built differently and all have different abilities. The key is to play comfortably and relaxed. Yes, as u progress your hands will limber up and strengthen, allowing for more dexterity. But there is no "requirement ". I've never gone to an audition where someone measured my left hand reach, lol. Musicianship is not determined by how any frets you span, it is what music you make. I have taught players with all levels of physical ability..they all were able to play well..  Myth: "Bass is easy" GRRR...OK...every instrument, every activity has challenges.  Bass, guitar, surgery, welding,  Walmart Greeter, butcher,  baker, candlestick maker...u dig? It is our choice to decide what challenges we choose to take on and how deep we dive into them. Myth: "You shouldn't think when u play". Well, yes and no. The concept is called "purposeful creativity". If u were giving a presentation at work or church or school...ur not ACTIVELY thinking about the rules of English grammar, but ur forming sentences and linking concepts to convey ur ideas to the audience. Similarly, when ur playing, ur thinking about the tune or the chords., interracting with bandmates and the audience. Ur not just a blank slate throwing notes out. Being able to meld creative freedom with musical purpose is a skill and takes time and practice Myth:, "Tube amps are better". Ugh...this goes under the general topic of "old is better". I dont buy that...gear is so personal..u do u, I do me and we will all make art.   Next week, more myths! #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons
