On this post-Halloween, chocolate hangover @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we will cover a topic I have spoken about MANY times in posts and written on my #whiteboard. NOTES! NOTES! NOTES!. In order to break free from the binds of riffs and licks, one must IMO look to the notes...every note, every time. I call it "Music on the Moloecular Level". This concept is not uncommon in other walks of life. For example, if u give a chicken to a 5* chef and they won't be looking up recipes, they will use their experience and knowledge of culinary science, along with other ingredients available to make a meal..u dig? We have to do the same...look at music fom the basis of basic (and advanced) music principles to allow us to look at it with a fresh perspective EVERY time and yield truly original and creative output. Now, u might say.."but Charley, I work in a cover/tribute band and my job is to play the music as accurately as possible". As we all know, this is no joke..it takes a lot of skill and us just as valid as any other playing situation. What you can do (in the woodshed) is to tear apart those lines, determine how they work...why you like them. This can be invaluable in furthering your musical understanding as it directly applies to your current situation. In addition, u will undoubtedly gain more respect for the bass player whose line ur studying. Ok...let's break this down. The goal is to know every note ur playing, it's function and what it sounds like against the harmony..EVERY TIME YOU PLAY. In the woodshed, your task is to OBSESS over every note so when u play the "whats" and "whys" become second nature and you can focus on being creative and original. It also allows you to react to your musical environment in a spontaneous, cohesive and directed way. As I said above, use cover tunes, original tunes, scales, arpeggios, pentatonics...whatever. The ultimate goal here us to be purposeful and creative. Need help? Get a teacher, work with like minded colleagues, use the internet...the sources are endless. As always, I invite your insights. #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #basslessons #remotelessons #musiconthemolecularlevel
