On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we begin a multi-part discussion on "myths". Many of u have seen me posting about "dispelling myths ". Well here ya go! I got a BUNCH of them. A caveat here. The "myths" I will present here are based on my experience as a performer and educator. Many of these can be up for debate. U disagree? GOOD! Any worthwhile topic can benefit from cordial discourse.  Ok, Myth: "Studying music will hurt your creativity and make you a robot".The issue here is how it is presented and how it is accepted. The subjects of study should (for the most part)not be looked at as rules or dogmas, but as guidelines, opportunities, clarifications, avenues of exploration. Study should make you feel empowered in the shed and on stage. At least it has for me, and many of my students have said the same. Myth:"You should never use open strings". I have had many students hit me with this and I am dumbfounded.  I don't know where it came from. I assume it was misconstrued from and interview or reference. Now, the choice of where one plays a given note depends on many factors, both objective and subjective. But the concept of omitting open strings, especially when they are so glorious in the right context, baffles me. Myth:"pick players are inferior or slackers". Use of a pick is a technique and each technique has advantages and disadvantages. Choose which way(s) you play and move on. Myth: "Jazz is only for advanced players". Dude, I've had third graders improvising! There are many levels to ANY genre or style and anyone can at least "get their feet wet" to see if they like it. Explore them all! There is no admission fee or resume required! Myth:"You should never change your strings". Ugh...the decision of when to change strings is totally based on preference and there is no right answer, IMO. But to, as some have, suggest it makes u play better or different is absurd. I had a student tell me, "the funk is in the gunk". I replied, "yeah, so is tuberculosis..lol". Next week, more myths! #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons #remotelessons
