Little things make bit things happen

On this installment of @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, I'm going to discuss a quote from a fitness professional that applies to the woodshed..."...little things allow for the big things.." Meaning, in order to be able to address any skills u are working on, u need to address all the parts that make up that skill first and then bring them together. I learned this early on when I studied slap with @tonyoppenheim. He broke everything down to all its parts (thumbing, plucking, hammer-ons, lift-offs, octaves, dead notes, etc.), emphasizing accuracy and time. We then brought them together allowing for clean, accurate creative applications. It truly made the process easier and more intuitive. I try to use this approach in all aspects of my shed and my lesson plans. For example, want to work on reading? Start slowly and simply, learning notes, and rhythms separately and efficient fingerings. Want to solo? Learn ur notes and scales intimately first, all over the board. Listen to others solos to get inspiration (no copying!) then begin to build melodies over chords and tunes being sensitive to dynamics and articulation. Want to make better basslines? Again, learn your notes and scales all over the board first, then begin to build simple (and eventually more complex) lines over chords slowly and originally...NO RIFFS...NO LICKS...U dig? The examples above are, of course, an oversimplification, but the idea is to take a skill and break it up into manageable bits. Then OBSESS over each "bit" one by one until u feel comfortable and then bring them together. It will build confidence, consistency and comfort so u can be creative. As always, I invite your insights. #yamahamusicusa #makewaves #pirastro #glasserny #laklandbasses #sitstrings #tsunamicables #philjonesbass #uptonbassstringinstrumentcompany #basslessons  #remotelessons #www.charleysabatino.com
