This week on @yamahamusicusa #silentbass and @laklandbasses Friday, we talk about "How to Choose a Teacher". First, u need to decide if private instruction is right for u. Do you have the time and funds to commit? Are you open to (constructive) criticism and desire to be put "put of ur comfort zone"? Be honest with yourself here,it will help to make the most of ur experience. Next, find a teacher that actually can and wants to TEACH. Just because someone is an amazing player or a celebrity doesn't mean they can effectively teach you. Look for someone with an organized approach and lesson plan steeped in fundamental music theory and practice. Not just "let's try this today" or the cool drill or "shortcut" system of the day. Take the time to talk with candidates (yes, they are candidates...ur interviewing THEM). Make sure they are pleasant, patient, enthusiastic and willing to teach u at ur current level. Also, find one that fits ur schedule and budget. Look for someone who includes and appreciates every style and genre. It won't help you if a teacher constantly talks about Charlie Parker if ur in a metal band..u dig? The goal is to improve your playing in ur current musical path, with exposure to other genres, techniques and styles without judgment. A good teacher should push you but not discourage or belittle you. You came to them because u want to improve, not be told how much u suck. You need someone who reveals your shortcomings AND gives you SPECIFIC tools and methods to address and improve them. You want to finish every lesson energized to get in the woodshed to improve, not have ur tail between ur legs. Ok, where do I find this magical being? Ask around your circle of friends and colleagues. See if there is a local teacher. Contact a local university, there may be a professor or grad student that teaches privately. Feel comfortable with remote learning? Look on social media, internet, Craig's List, Reddit, etc. You can also find helpful reviews. Lastly, this is not a marriage, if it isn't working, move on to another teacher..remember YOU ARE the priority here. As always, I invite your insights. #basslessons #remotelessons
